Zhu Menghui, 17, of China successfully lowered the World Junior record in the women’s 50-SCM free at the Beijing stop of the 2016 FINA/airweave World Cup Series when she tied for first with Denmark’s Jeanette Ottesen.
The pair stopped the clock at the 24.00 mark to flirt with a sub-24 second swim in finals.
The previous women’s 50 freestyle World Junior Record was a time of 24.09, however FINA has no name associated with the time. This is because when FINA began recognizing short course meter records in January of 2015 they simply set “benchmarks” for times. As those benchmark times are bypassed the record book begins to fill with names.
