MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men’s swimming team announced Thursday the addition of four new members to the program, as Kevin Braun (McHenry, Ill.), Victor Goicoechea (Barcelona, Spain), Niko Stines (Atlanta, Ga.) and Cameron Tysoe (Canberra, Australia) have each signed National Letters of Intent to join the Badgers this fall.
Kevin Braun (McHenry, Illinois – McHenry High School)
Wisconsin adds a skilled sprint swimmer from McHenry, Illinois, in Braun. The 6-foot-5 incoming freshman attended McHenry High School where he set career best times of 20.71 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and 45.32 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle. On relay splits, Braun has clocked in at 19.56 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle and 44.77 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle. His 50-yard freestyle split of 19.56 seconds would have been the third-fastest time on Wisconsin’s “A†relay team at the Big Ten championships this year.
Victor Goicoechea (Barcelona, Spain – University of Hawai’i)
A transfer from the University of Hawai’i, Goicoechea will join the program as a junior this fall. A 6-foot-4 distance swimmer, he was the 2010 and 2012 Spanish National Champion in the 400-meter freestyle. Coicoechea holds career best times of 14 minutes, 52.10 seconds in the 1650-yard freestyle, 4:16.67 in the 500-yard freestyle and 1:36.07 in the 200-yard freestyle. For comparison, his lifetime best in the 500-yard freestyle is a little over three seconds behind the current Wisconsin school record in the event, which was set by All-American Matt Hutchins this season.
Niko Stines (Atlanta, Ga. – North Atlanta High School)
A 6-foot-3 sprint swimmer from Atlanta, Georgia, Stines actually began his swimming career in the U.S. Virgin Islands where he spent part of his childhood. While living in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Stines qualified for the national youth team. He later moved to Atlanta for his freshman year of high school and joined the Swim Atlanta swim club, as well as North Atlanta High School. He attended USA Swimming Junior Nationals in Atlanta this past December and placed in the top 20 in his 100-freestyle individual event. Career best times for Stines include: 21.06 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle, 45.20 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle and 1 minute, 40.16 seconds in the 200-yard freestyle. He will be a freshman this fall.
