Williams College Ahead After Day 1 of NESCAC Mens Championships

Defending champion Williams College sits in the lead following day one of the 2016 NESCAC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Williams College. The Ephs tallied 657.5 points followed by Connecticut College with 545.5 points in second place. Amherst and Tufts are in third and fourth place, respectively, with 501 and 491 points.

The session began with the 200-yard freestyle relay, in which the Williams College team of Jamie Finnegan, Curtis Maher, Grant Johnson, and Alex McCarter edged out Connecticut College with a time of 1:21.56, a new pool and meet record as well as an NCAA provisional time.

Jake Tamposi of Williams College captured the first individual event of the night, the 50-yard breaststroke, with a time of 25.17 seconds. The victory marked the fourth time in his career that he won the event.  His preliminary time from the morning session of 24.88 seconds broke the pool, meet, and NESCAC record. Timothy Kostolansky from Williams was victorious in the 50-yard butterfly, touching at 21.93. This was slightly off his pool, meet, and NESCAC record from the preliminary session (21.72).

Connor Haley gave Amherst its first win of the championship, winning the 500-yard freestyle with an NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 4:33.75. Williams’ Benjamin Lin won the 50-yard backstroke for the third straight year after posting a time of 22.33 seconds. His time of 21.84 seconds from the preliminary session took the pool, meet, and NESCAC record by almost half a second.
