Safe to say that Molly Hannis had a busy weekend. Hannis started off by competing in the 100 breast at the Arena Pro Swim Series in Orlando on Thursday, tying with Melanie Margalis for second in 1:07.37 and finishing behind World Champion Yuliya Efimova.
After that race, Hannis got in the car and drove overnight back to her training base in Knoxville for the Southern Premier Championships. Just 24 hours after racing in Orlando and on very little sleep, Hannis raced the 100 breast again and, this time, won, edging Katie Meili by a half second. Hannis posted a time of 1:06.16, behind just Efimova’s 1:05.70 from Orlando as the second-best time in the world. Hannis also won the 200 breast on Sunday in Knoxville, clocking 2:25.44.
During her one off-day from racing on Saturday, Hannis took a few minutes to sit down with Swimming World contributor David Rieder to discuss her exciting weekend. Hannis explained why she decided to keep competing after wrapping up her NCAA career last season, what she has gained from travelling the world to compete on the World Cup circuit, her goals for this summer’s Olympic Trials and how her life has changed as a professional.
