This week it was announced that long-time coach Mark Schubert has accepted a position as Associate Head Coach for the Mission Viejo Nadadores. That is a full circle move for Schubert, who had great success with the club in the 1970’s and 1980’s, coaching a group that went on to win 17 Olympic medals, set 88 American Records, and set 21 World Records. His athletes at that time included swim legends such as Shirley Babashoff, Tiffany Cohen, Brian Goodell, Sippy Woodhead, and Dara Torres. The coach left the club in 1985 for a short stint with the Mission Bay Makos before heading to college swimming, where he had decorated careers at the University of Texas and USC. He left USC in 2007 to become the National Team Director of USA Swimming, but left that post in 2010. Schubert has most recently been the head coach of the Golden West Swim Club and Golden West Community College since 2011. Schubert will coach with Bill Rose, who announced his retirement earlier this year, until his retirement in December of next year.
