Shortly after the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, I signed on as the executive director for the U.S. Canoe and Kayak Team (USCKT). I spent almost two quads leading this NGB, and it was, for me, a great education about international sport.
I learned a great deal about Olympic history during these years, and made it a point to study how it was that Pierre de Coubertin brought the Modern Olympic Games to life in 1896. I was always taken with his oft-quoted statement that, “The important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle, the essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.â€
