Alex Sumner, 15, of the Suburban Seahawks (Newtown Square, Pa.) joined some elite company at the Eastern Interscholastic Swim- ming and Diving Championships earlier this year. Clocking a 53.57 to win the 100 yard back, Sumner bettered U.S. national team member Teresa Crippen’s meet record of 54.16, set in 2008. A year earlier, Crippen was a three-time medalist (two gold— including the 200 back—and one silver) at the Pan Ams in Rio; in 2010, she was a silver medalist in the 200 fly at Pan Pacs.
When Sumner is not in the water, she enjoys going to amusement parks. “If there is an amusement park close to where Alex is swim- ming in a meet, she’ll stay an extra day after the meet to ride the roll- er coasters,†Sumner’s dad, Jeff, told Swimming World with a laugh. “…The bigger, the better!â€
