Beginning with the November issue and running through July 2016—a month before the start of the Olympic swimming events in Rio on Aug. 6—Swimming World Magazine will bring you its top 9 upsets in the individual events in Olympic history—in particular, in the last 50 years.
This month features Sylvia Poll of Costa Rica who, at the age of 18, because the first athlete from Costa Rica to earn a medal at the Olympic Games. Poll battled the women of East Germany (GDR) for spots on the podium during the 1988 Olympic Games. It wasn’t until finals of the 200 free that Poll was able to put the small country of Costa Rica on the map, but she did it with grace and poise.
