Many people believe that it is worth copying the technique of the fastest swimmers. In reality, even the fastest swimmers have technique limitations, but they offset them with strength and conditioning. The purpose of this series of articles is to address scientifically the technique misconceptions that have become “conventional wisdom,†and to present options that are more effective.
According to conventional wisdom, a swimmer will break 40 seconds for the 100 meter freestyle in about the year 2060. Applying currently available scientific information, however, it is very possible that a swimmer will break that barrier much sooner. This—as well as other dramatic improvements— are possible only when the swimming culture is willing to break with conventional wisdom and “risk†applying science. In actuality, the greater “risk†is to ignore science and lose a competitive advantage.
