Frank Busch, USA Swimming’s national team director, took the time to offer his take on the Rio Games—the good, the bad and the ugly–for Swimming World Magazine.
USA National Team Director Frank Busch convened with the 2016 U.S. Olympic team three different times leading up to the Rio Games. Each meeting had a theme. Each theme played a role in stra- tegically building momentum before Olympic racing commenced. At the three meetings, one at each training camp (San Antonio and Atlanta) and one before the start of the Games, Busch emphasized the importance of preparation, performance, and pride.
“The national anthem—that’s our fight song at the Olympics,†Busch said. So, when an American stood atop the podium mouthing the words to “The Star-Spangled Bannerâ€â€”Team USA’s All-American fight song—as tears streamed down his or her cheeks, the sense of pride was palpable.
