Swimming World continues a series in which top coaches share some of the secrets of their success. The October issue of Swimming World Magazine highlights the many accomplishments of Olympian and Coach George Breen.
Breen was discovered by and trained under the famed Doc Counsilman who became a seminal influence in his development as a world-class swimmer and lifelong swim coach. With Counsilman’s tutelage Breen earned four Olympic medals (three individual, one relay) and was named captain of the men’s 1960 Olympic team.
As a coach Breen lent his talent to a variety of places: the University of Pennsylvania, Team Delaware, and then the Gloucester County Institute of Technology (now known as the Greater Philadelphia Aquatic Club). Breen can still be found on deck working with the Jersey Wahoos Swim Club in Mount Laurel, N.J.
