While there was plenty of NCAA college swimming this week, across the globe in South Africa one of the sport’s best quietly started off his new year with some noteworthy performances. Competing in the South African Grand Prix meet in Mpumalanga, Chad le Clos, the South African gold medalist who famously out-touched Michael Phelps in the final yards of the 200 butterfly at the London Games, started his Olympic year off right with three individual wins at the South African Grand Prix in Mpumalanga.Â
Of those three wins, le Clos’ most impressive was his 100 butterfly, where he stopped the clock at 51.82. That’s a solid swim for the South African Olympian, and is just more than a second off his 2015 best of 50.56 that he recorded en route to a gold medal at the World Championships. However, that time only left him second in the world last year. Michael Phelps held the top ranked time of 2015 with his 50.45 from U.S. Summer Nationals. le Clos also scored wins in the 50 butterfly (24.14) and 100 freestyle (49.22) throughout the weekend.
Congratulations Chad le Clos, for earning the Swimming World Performance of the Week!
