The 2016 Eastern Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championships continued tonight with some incredibly fast swims during the finals session. Two meet records fell that had withstood over 15 years worth of competition, while the men’s diving record was uprooted after just one year.
Reece Whitley of Penn Charter delivered a stunning performance in the 200 IM stopping the clock at the 1:47.55 mark. Whitley’s time took down Nick Kaschik’s meet record of 1:48.10 down after an eighteen-year reign. Reona Yamaguchi of Peddie finished second overall with a final time of 1:52.55, while third went to Haverford’s Brian Brenner and his time of 1:54.19.
With a whirlwind of speed the men’s 200 free relay bested the meet record of 1:22.70, a record that had stood since 1992. The relay team of Nathan Stern (21.07), Michael Blank (19.89), Joe Black (20.94), and Jared Fitzgerald (20.71) posted a final time of 1:22.61 for the new record. Penn Charter’s relay finished second in the event with a time of 1:25.56 and a close third went to Mercersburg and their time of 1:25.68.
