This week’s performance of the week is not based on a single time or a single race, but rather the culmination of a remarkable athletic career. On Sunday, thirty honorees (ten from each division) gathered in Indianapolis, Indiana for a ceremony to see who would be named 2016 NCAA Woman of the Year. At the end of the night, it was former Massachusetts Institute of Technology swimmer Margaret Guo who earned the award, becoming the twelfth swimming and diving athlete to win since the award’s inception and the fourth athlete from Division III to win the award.
A May 2016 graduate of MIT, Guo earned degrees in electrical engineering, computer science, and biological engineering all while holding a perfect grade point average. During her time at MIT, she was involved in multiple professional, academic, and community service organizations while also co-authoring two scholarly articles and holding two patent pending recognitions. She has earned the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award, the NCAA Elite 90 Award, and was a Rhodes finalist and Goldwater Scholar. Guo has also worked as a software intern for the HPI Engineering at Intuitive Surgical and received the Intel Scholarship and GE Women’s Network Scholarship.
While competing for the women’s swimming and diving team, Guo was a two-time NCAA All-American, a three-time NCAA All-American Honorable Mention, a six-time NEWMAC All-Conference honoree, and current record holder of three NEWMAC swimming records. She was also named as the 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America Athlete of the Year representing the at-large category, and received Academic All-American Awards in 2015 and 2016. She is the first student-athlete from either MIT or the NEWMAC to win the NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
Since 1991, the NCAA Woman of the Year award has honored the achievements of female student-athletes in the realm of athletics, community service, leadership, and academics across all three divisions. There were a record 517 nominated athletes for the 2016 award last spring, and out of the final 30 nominees there were five athletes representing swimming & diving across all three divisions.
