While most European stars were taking this week to regroup from the European Championships from last week, Iron Lady Katinka Hosszu went right back to work. Racing at the 3-day Bergen Swim Festival in Bergen, Norway, Hosszu blasted a 4:04.96 during 400 meter freestyle prelims on the final day of the week. That swim beat her previous best time of 4:05.51 from the Monte Carlo Mare Nostrum tour stop  in 2014, and came while essentially swimming alone. Hosszu’s closest competitor was Japan’s Natsumi Hoshi, who was second behind her in prelims with a 4:23.03.
While Hosszu added over 10 seconds in the final to win with a much tamer 4:15.26, that came on the third day of a meet where Hosszu was racing every single event. Yes, you read that correctly: Hosszu raced every single event through all three days of the meet, registering several dozen races over the course of the meet. The fact that she could bust out a best time (and an internationally competitive time at that – that time would have earned bronze at European Champs last week) in the midst of that racing is incredibly impressive. Hosszu is already a medal favorite in the 200/400 IM and 100/200 backstroke for the 2016 Rio Olympics, and this kind of performance shows not only her incredible versatility, but her ability to push through high levels of fatigue.Â
