Cate Campbell led a strong Australian sprint contingent at their recent Olympic Trials in Adelaide. First, she won the 100 freestyle in a world-leading 52.38 with the two women behind her–sister Bronte Campbell and Emma McKeon–also posting 52’s. That time was only five one-hundredths off her best time from 2013 that also stands as the Commonwealth Record.
But it was Campbell’s performance in the 50 freestyle that added a new record to the books. Touching in 23.84 to grab first, Campbell broke Libby Trickett’s Commonwealth Record to secure the win and firmly place her as the woman to watch in the sprint events this summer. No other woman has broken 24.00 this season, which puts the Australian in a league of her own going into the Olympics. In fact her closest competitor is more than 3-tenths back: Sarah Sjostrom, who has been on fire as well this year, sits second in the world with a 24.17. Campbell’s time was only 11-hundredths short of Britta Steffen’s 2009 world record in the event and is also a textile-best for the event. She will be joined in Rio by her sister, Bronte, who was second in 24.24 and will also be challenging for a podium spot this summer.
Congratulations Cate Campbell on earning Swimming World’s Performance of the Week!
