This week was full of fast swimming from Division II, with their NCAA meet underway in Indianapolis and records falling left and right. Queens University defended their team titles on both the men’s and women’s sides, and all in all a staggering seventeen NCAA Division II records were broken throughout the meet. While Queens Patricia Castro Ortega led the way with four NCAA records in individual events, it was her teammate Dion Dreesens that may have had the most noteworthy performance of the meet.
Winning the 200 freestyle by nearly three seconds, Dreesens touched the wall at 1:32.46 to break his own DII NCAA record. The junior had owned the previous record of 1:34.20 from just a few weeks ago when he clipped it by one-hundredth at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference. Out in 44.81 in that swim, Dreesens faded down the stretch to just get the NCAA record, but there was no fading the second time around at NCAA’s. Out just a hair faster in 44.66, Dreesens backed it up with a 23.84 and 23.96 on his third and fourth 50’s to come home in 47.80 and smash the old record.
As of the writing of this article, that time also ties Dreesens for 2nd among all NCAA athletes, including Division I swimmers. While that may change after Division I NCAA’s in a few weeks, it still speaks to the level of performance that Dreesens had at this meet. And still just a junior, it will be exciting to see how Dreesens can use this monster to swim to springboard into this summer and his final collegiate season next year.
Congratulations Dion Dreesens on earning Swimming World’s Performance of the Week!
