It was announced yesterday, June 8th, by Inside The Games that Mexico City will be the host city for the 2017 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming World Championships. The event will be held alongside the IPC Powerlifting World Championships. In May of last year it was announced that the Mexican capital would be the stage for the powerlifting event and now they have secured the rights for the IPC’s swimming championships.
It’s expected that approximately 550 swimmers from 60 different countries will compete at the Swimming World Championships, while more than 360 powerlifters from 65 countries are expected to attend the Powerlifting World Championships.
Both events will be held at venues that were used during the 1968 Olympic Games with the appropriate construction and updates finished to bring the venues up to code. Swimming will be held at the Francisco Marquez Olympic Swimming Pool which is located in the same building as the Juan de la Barrera Olympic Gymnasium where the powerlifters will be.
The IPC announced that hosting the two competitions together, attracting a combined 900 or so athletes, will give visitors and spectators the chance “to enjoy a festival of Para sport in 2017.”
