POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist swimming and diving program held its end of the year team banquet April 24, announcing the women’s and men’s captains for the 2016-17 campaign and handing out team awards from this past season.
Current juniors Sarah Mosca and Meredith Wurtz were selected as women’s captains by their teammates. Mosca placed second in the 200-yard butterfly at the 2016 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships with a time of 2:09.11. She won the same event in three regular season meets and competed in the 200-yard butterfly and the 200- and 400-yard individual medley at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. Wurtz was this year’s MAAC Women’s Swimmer of the Meet after breaking four school records and winning three individual events: the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyle. She also anchored four relay squads that took home gold medals. The 800-yard freestyle relay’s finish of 7:29.41 and the 400-yard medley relay team’s mark of 3:47.35 set new Marist records. Wurtz also led off for the school record holding 200-yard freestyle relay squad in 2014.
On the men’s side, current sophomores Peter Gallino and Robert McDowell and junior Matt Darcy will lead the Red Foxes as captains after a team vote. Gallino was named ECAC Diver of the Meet after finishing second on the 1- (279.50 points) and 3-meter (292.95 points) boards at the regional championship. He placed in the top five at three meters at the MAAC Championships. McDowell was Marist’s top finisher in the backstroke at the MAAC Championships, placing second in the 100-yard event (50.81 seconds) and third at 200 yards (1:50.64). He led off for the 200- and 400-yard medley relay squads. Darcy placed third in the 100-yard breastroke at the MAAC Championships, clocking in at 1:02.56. He competed in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke at the ECAC Championships.
Marist handed out Freshmen and Team MVP honors. Recipients of these awards were chosen through a point scale from regular season and postseason meets combined. Lauren Katz and Daniel Knoll were recognized as the top performers after their first year on campus. Katz placed second in the 1-meter dive by 0.45 points in the home finale against Seton Hall onJan. 26. She finished eighth in the same event at the ECAC Championships with 201.35 points. Knoll turned in second place finishes in the 50- (20.70 seconds) and 200-yard (1:42.13) freestyle at the MAAC Championships. He won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle in his collegiate debut at Canisius on Oct. 16.
