POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist women’s swimming and diving program, led by Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Head Coach of the Year Larry VanWagner and MAAC Diving Coach of the Year Melanie Bolstad, has announced six incoming freshmen for the 2016-17 season. The members of the Class of 2020 are all swimming recruits for the first time since the class that came to Poughkeepsie prior to the 2013-14 season and hail from Florida and the tri-state area.
Alemy Barreto – Breast/Free – Weston, FL – Cypress Bay – Azura Florida Aquatics
A team captain her junior and senior seasons at Cypress Bay High School, Barreto was a top five qualifier at the BCAA Swimming and Diving Championship and took third place in the 100-yard breaststroke at the 2016 Miami Open Water Championships. She finished as a district, regional, and state qualifier for the Florida High School Athletic Association Championships and has been swimming competitively with Azura Florida Aquatics for more than nine years. Academically, Barreto was an active member of the Spanish and National Honor Societies and the National Society of High School Scholars. She was an AP Scholar with Honors and has contributed more than 500 hours of community service to her hometown, primarily to non-profit organizations that focus on families and children with needs.
