The LumaLanes Performance of the Week goes to Alia Atkinson of Jamaica, who sprinted her way to a new world record in the short course meters 50 breaststroke at the Tokyo stop of the 2016 FINA World Cup Series. Touching in 28.64, Atkinson took .16 off of Jessica Hardy’s world record from 2009.

One of the consistent athletes on the 2016 World Cup circuit this year, this was Atkinson’s second world record of the series. She had previously tied her existing world record in the 100 breaststroke back in August at the Paris stop of the series, matching a mark she had already tied at the 2014 Short Course World Championships in Doha. Each world record on the World Cup circuit comes with a $10,000 bonus in prize money, which gives Atkinson an extra $10,000 in prize money on this circuit from her 50 breaststroke world record.Â
