Swimming World continues its “Lessons With the Legends,†a series in which top coaches share secrets of their success, in the February issue with a feature on Peter Daland, co-founder of Swimming World Magazine.
Daland (April 12, 1921-October 20, 2014) was a pillar of American and international swimming both as a coach and as an aquatic trustee. A Harvard grad, Daland migrated to the West where he helped build national powerhouses at the Los Angeles Athletic Club and the University of Southern California. While at USC Daland’s teams finished first or second at the Division I NCAA’s 21 times and were in the top ten 31 times in his 35 years there.
In 1964 he served as the U.S. Olympic coach for the women’s swim team, and then served as the men’s coach for the 1972 Summer Olympics. In 1992 he received the Bob Ousley award for outstanding service from ASCA, an organization which he helped found and was a long-time board member of. He was also honored by the AAU and the CSCAA and resides in the ISHOF (1977) and ASCA (2002) Halls of Fame.
To read more about Peter Daland’s impressive history and to read what some of America’s most distinguished aquatic voices recall about this legend, check out the February issue of Swimming World Magazine!Â
