At the 2016 Wyoming Girls 3A High School State Championship, Lander Valley High School won the team’s first state title since 2011, totaling 321 points. Sublette County was runner up with 177 points, just 10 ahead of third place finishers Worland High School.
The meet was close at the start as Riverton’s Kaylie Gopp, Jordan Lewis, Sonsoles Aguayo, and Josie Dike edged Lander’s Maria Kulow, McKenzie Lilygren, Rachel Kauffman, and Abby Hamilton 1:56.11 to 1:56.72 for the win. Douglas finished third with a 2:00.04 from Desirae Layher, Maecie Wright, Elli Wortham, and Rhylee Ramsey.
Lander freshman Olivia Fowler battled Riverton’s freshman Dike for the 200 freestyle title. Fowler came out on top, 2:04.51 to 2:05.64. Fowler’s senior teammate Jenny Nielsen won a close battle for third in 2:05.64.
