Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu won nine events at the Doha stop of the World Cup over the weekend, and with her meet-ending victory in the 400 IM Sunday, she secured the 200th World Cup gold medal of her career.
Since her debut on the World Cup circuit in 2012, Hosszu has been simply dominant. She won 39 golds in 2012, 33 in 2013, 52 in 2014, 30 in 2015 and already 46 this year—with stops in Singapore, Tokyo and Hong Kong still to go.
Hosszu’s golds have come in an amazing 12 different events: the 100, 200, 400 and 800 free; 50, 100 and 200 back; 100 and 200 fly; and 100, 200 and 400 IM. In other words, the only events she has never won are the 50 free, 50 fly and three breaststroke events. She has won every single World Cup race contested in the 200 IM since 2013. She also won each race of the 100 and 200 back and of the 100 IM in 2014. In 2015, she won the 400 IM at all eight meets.
Through six stops in 2016, Hosszu is undefeated in the 200 free, 400 free, 100 back and all three IMs. She also leads the overall women’s World Cup standings and has by far the highest earnings in prize money of any woman on this year’s circuit.
