Kate Douglass, a sophomore a Pelham High School, dashed to a new National Age Group record in the girls 50 free while swimming at the New York High School Section 1 Girls’ Championships.
The 14-year-old posted a 22.32, setting her up to properly defend her title in the event, while also sliding past Olympian Dara Torres’ 34-year-old record of 22.44. Set in 1982, the 50 free was Torres’ last remaining NAG record on the books.
Pending ratification by USA Swimming (the NY High School Section 1 Girls’ Championships is not a USA Swimming sanctioned meet, but records can still be set in competition), Douglass will have downed the oldest 13-14 short course NAG record on the books. The oldest record on the books will now be Katie Hoff’s 400 IM from 2004.
The young sprint star will turn 15 just one day before the New York State Championship meet begins on November 18th, with one club meet on November 13th left to target any final NAG records.
