Justina Kozan broke a 40 year old Southern California Swimming record on Thursday night. The 12 year old posted a 2:05.63 to win the 11-12 year old girls’ 200 freestyle by six seconds. The swim dipped under Sippy Woodhead‘s Southern California Swimming record of 2:05.80, set in 1976.
29.41, 1:01.52 (32.11), 1:34.08 (32.56), 2:05.63 (31.55)
That swim was still over two seconds from the National Age Group record, a 2:03.38 swum by Dee Brown in 1981.
Woodhead went onto become a three time world champion at age 14. She was a multiple event favorite in the boycotted 1980 Olympics, and won silver in the 200 freestyle at the 1984 Games. She was present at the Southern California Swimming Junior Olympics in Riverside, where her own children are swimming, when her record was broken.
