The Italian Swimming Federation voted to re-elect Paolo Barelli as the president of their organization at last weekend’s annual meeting in Rome.
The Federazione Italiana Nuoto (FIN) collected a total of 16,560 votes of which Barelli garnered 13.811, finishing well ahead of Alessandro Valentini’s 2,158 votes. This re-election marks Barelli’s fifth term as the FIN President, which will run from 2016-2020.
Barelli was a member of both the 1972 and 1976 Italian Olympic Team, making finals in the 400 Medley Relay and 800 Freestyle Relay at the 1976 Montreal Games. While swimming in Cali in 1975 Barelli was a member of the bronze medal 400 Freestyle Relay, where they won Italy’s first world medal in the history of men’s Italian swimming.
Having resided over the presidency since his original election in 2000, Barelli’s presidency has seen the Italian Swimming Federation win fifteen Olympic medals and 71 World Championship medals.
