Saturday’s NEWMAC showdown between the women of Coast Guard vs. Wheaton did not disappoint as the meet of the week. Headed in the final 200 freestyle relay, Coast Guard found themselves on top of the team scores 141-136. At this point, there were a few ways this meet could go down – a Wheaton win and a Coast Guard two-three would end in a tie, a Wheaton one-three would clinch the meet by four, and obviously a Coast Guard win would secure their victory.
In case this ending was not dramatic enough, the relay teams of Caitlin Daley, Maggie Lawlor, Tayla Slater and Jenna Hayden (W) and Kristen Young, Christine McCulla, Rachel Seaman and Jackie Kokomoor (CG) tied with a time of 1:41.55. This gave each team 7.50 points, with the Wheaton B team taking third. While this narrowed the gap, it was not quite enough to put Wheaton on top.
Wheaton was able to grab the 200 medley relay to kick off the meet. Kelley Baylis, Erin Kean, Aleza Epstein and Daley teamed up to win the event in 1:53.07 over Coast Guard’s 1:53.40. But the dynamic distance duo of Christine McCulla and Maddie Heist put Coast Guard back on track by going one-two in the 1,000. The team also had one-two finishes in the 200 free, 100 breast, 100 free and 500 free. These efforts put Coast Guard ahead of two dominant Wheaton divers and nearly two relay victories for Wheaton.
