Abbey Weitzeil missed the American record by the slimmest of margins in the 50-yard free at the 2016 American Short Course Championships in Austin.
She clocked a 21.28 leadoff to just miss Lara Jackson’s American record of 21.27 set as a relay leadoff for Arizona during the 2009 NCAA Division I Women’s Championships.
Weitzeil still has a chance during the individual event later tonight.
This morning during prelims, Weitzeil threw down a scorching fast time of 21.42.
