The 6A Georgia High School State Swimming and Diving Championships kick off this weekend, February fourth through the sixth. Â With diving preliminaries beginning Thursday, prelims for swimming Friday and finals on Saturday, the competition is looking fierce.
On the men’s side, The Westminster School is coming in very strong. Â Seeded first in all three relays, Westminster is only a little over three tenths off the 6A GHS State record set in 2014. Â Other quick swims to keep your eyes out for include Dean Farris, a senior from Paideia High School, ranked first in the 100 fly, less than half a second off the 2014 state record, as well as second in the 200 free. Â Although the upperclassmen seem to be looking dominant in the psych sheet, be open for the younger grades to make a splash as well. Â Freshman Liam Bell is ranked first in the 100 breaststroke and third in the 200 IM, surrounded by Juniors and Seniors seeded directly above and below him.
On the women’s side, Pace Academy is looking strong, seeded first in both the 200 Medley Relay and 400 Free Relay. Â With the quartet consisting of exclusively upperclassmen, their competition will have to race against experience. Â In the mid distance scene, Junior Caitlyn McHugh from Allatoona High School is seeded first in both the 200 free and 500 free. Â Alexandria Ham from Kell High school is seeded first in the 100 backstroke and the 200 IM. Â Wesleyan High School is also looking strong, seeded first in the 200 freestyle relay, although they are only a mere five hundredths ahead of Druid Hills High School.
